Black & Blue + studded baby loafers

on me: jacket: bebe (similar) | shirt: tracy reese for neiman marcus x target | skirt: forever 21 | belt: forever 21 (similar) | shoes: aldo (similar) | bracelet: j crew

on lorelai: dress: baby gap (cute one here) | studded loafers: zara kids (love these)| necklace: dior

I've always considered myself a simple dresser. I'm someone who usually stays away from layers and accessories because they feel like too much fuss (I've definitely taken the Coco Chanel quote about removing the last thing you put on before you leave the house to heart). However, when I was working retail, the one dress code rule we were required to follow was TBLA or "top, bottom, layer, accessory".  Looking back this was definitely a ploy to oversell to clients but it forced me to step out of my comfort zone and create more interesting outfits. While this look would have been fine with just the top and skirt, the cropped leather jacket and cobalt belt add a little more dimension.

Are you good at layering pieces or do you need to put a bit more thought into dressing like I do?

Lucky in Leather

shirt: prabal gurung for target | necklace: bebe (similar on sale) | leather leggings: purchased in japan (similar) | lace booties: kardashian for bebe (similar) | bracelet: tiffany & co

With all of the crazy colorful patterns in the Prabal Gurung for Target collection (see my other post here) I opted to invest in a few solid staple pieces with a little twist. The lace overlay on this button up is a new and different take on a classic cut and the faux leather collar adds just enough edge to keep it current while remaining appropriate for dressier, more corporate settings. Liquid leggings are pretty much mandatory for trying to remain stylish while chasing around a toddler (they're super comfy but still more appealing than cotton leggings)! I was working as a stylist for bebe in 2010 when the Kardashian clan collaborated to create these incredible lace booties and they're still fun to pull out of my closet every now and then.

p.s. I'm having a hair crisis. I'm so tired of the color and (lack of) style! I've been toying with the idea of going blonde or trying out some ombre for quite a while but I'm trigger shy when it comes to any kind of change for my mane. What do you think I should do? Keep in mind I'm totally attached to length and have a total meltdown every time I make the mistake of going any shorter than shoulder length.

My Picks: Crewcuts Sale

This year for Lent I'm giving up buying clothes for myself. As humans we're pre-wired to find pleasure in hunting and acquiring things (even if those things happen to be fabulous shoes!) and as a style blogger I am always tempted to pick up a little something for myself. I thought a forty day buying freeze would be a fun little test of will and would allow me to save some money, learn to rework some of the pieces I've been neglecting and allow me some time to stock up on other things we need.

Someone is my house who does need new clothes? Lorelai! She's on the cusp of turning two years old and already wearing a size 2T which means she's finally able to start rocking crewcuts, J Crew's childrens line. I love crewcuts for their mini-sized preppy staples and fun, quirky patterns. See a few pieces that look familiar? They frequently pull inspiration from their mommy-sized collection and even duplicate pieces completely (those fab green pants come in my size too!). The best part? All of these great pieces are on sale (with a coupon code for an additional 40% off)! EXTRA 40% OFF FINAL SALE ITEMS WITH CODE STYLE40. PLUS, FREE SHIPPING ON ANY ORDER
